Europe Launches Cloud ’Gatekeeper’ Probe Targeting Amazon and Microsoft
The European Commission has initiated an investigation into Amazon and Microsoft to determine if their cloud computing services qualify as 'gatekeepers' under the Digital Markets Act. The probe focuses on Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure, assessing their role as intermediaries between businesses and consumers.
If designated as gatekeepers, both companies WOULD have six months to comply with DMA regulations aimed at ensuring fair competition in digital markets. "Cloud computing services power Europe's digital future," said Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy. "Such services should be offered in a fair, open manner."
